Cappadocia weather, month by month
From January to December: temperatures, rain, light and crowds. Which month is best for ballooning, walking or photography? A month-by-month Cappadocia calendar.

Cappadocia sits on a high plateau, about a thousand metres above sea level, with a continental climate. The seasons are clear-cut: winters are cold and snowy, summers dry and hot, while spring and autumn change dramatically from week to week. The figures below are approximate and vary from year to year, but it is still wise to check the latest forecast before you travel.
Winter: December, January, February
When snow settles on the fairy chimneys, Cappadocia becomes a different place: quiet, bright, almost empty. Cold, dry, clear days give long visibility, and photographers consider it the best time of the year. Snow-covered valleys turn pink at sunrise and violet at sunset, and balloons look different against the snow. Cave hotels with their warm rooms turn winter into a pleasure in itself: below zero outside, a glass of tea in your hands inside.
- December: Daytime a few degrees above zero, nights around minus three or four. Early snow is common. Daylight ends early.
- January: The coldest month. About 3 degrees by day and as low as minus five at night. Valleys under snow are beautiful and slippery.
- February: Still cold, but days start to lengthen. About 5 degrees by day. Snow and sunny spells alternate.
There are no crowds in winter; even popular spots can be yours alone. In return you accept short days and the occasional walk that has to be cancelled. We cover what to pack in what to wear in Cappadocia.
Spring: March, April, May
March is still the tail of winter, with melting snow, mud and wind. With April the valleys turn green, and in May flowers and foliage peak. The charm of this season is its changeability: rain, sun and wind can follow one another within a day.
- March: About 10 degrees by day, nights still near freezing. Mixed weather.
- April: About 16 degrees by day. Frequent showers, but wonderful light in between. Walking season begins.
- May: About 21 degrees by day. One of the greenest and busiest months of the year. Occasional downpours.
In spring a rain jacket and layers remain essential. Ground can be slippery on walks, so choose sturdy shoes on valley paths. Places can run short in May and early June, so plan your balloon flight and tours ahead. In this season you can experience four seasons in one day; we often see guests set out in hat and gloves and walk around in a T-shirt by afternoon.
Summer: June, July, August
Summer in Cappadocia is dry and sunny. Days are hot and nights are still cool. Long days leave time for evening activities, and mornings are generally the calmest hours for ballooning.
- June: About 26 degrees by day, nights around 11. Very long days. Some showers early in the month.
- July: About 30 degrees by day, nights around 14. Almost no rain. You will want shade at midday.
- August: Similar to July, mostly hot and dry. Crowds reach their peak.
The best summer routine is to start early, rest in the shade at midday and go out again in the evening. The underground cities and rock churches offer cool relief in the afternoon heat. Water, a hat and sunscreen are a must. For evening light, see our sunset spots. Do not plan walks for the midday heat; apart from shaded valleys such as Ihlara, the paths can be oppressive, so keep long walks for the morning or late afternoon. Summer is also a sweet time for ATV and horse rides: programmes timed for sunset let you avoid both the heat and the crowd.
Autumn: September, October, November
For many locals, autumn is the finest time in Cappadocia. The grape harvest in the vineyards, golden leaves in the valleys, fewer crowds and a gentler light await you.
- September: About 25 degrees by day, nights around 9. The summer heat has gone and the weather is steady. Excellent for ballooning and hiking.
- October: About 18 degrees by day, nights around 4. Mornings turn cold, afternoons are still mild. The chance of rain rises.
- November: About 11 degrees by day, nights around zero. A calm, grey month, sometimes with the first snow.
September and October, together with spring, are peak seasons for many visitors, so weekends and public holidays can be busy. Weekdays are far more relaxed. Dress in layers for the cold mornings of October; gloves and a hat are no bad idea on balloon mornings. November is for those who want to see Cappadocia more through the eyes of the locals: closing guesthouses, fading crowds, a stillness before winter.
Balloons and weather: when do they fly?
For ballooning, the decisive factor is not temperature but wind. Summer mornings are generally calm; in spring, wind and rain, and in winter, fog and snow, can disrupt flights. Not only rain but low cloud, fog, poor visibility and even strong ground-level wind can stop a flight, and the weather in Cappadocia can differ from valley to valley. The decision is made in the early morning based on measurements and is not up to the agency. If a flight is cancelled, we move you to the next morning at no cost, or you receive a full refund. That is why we suggest putting the balloon on your first mornings. Read our balloon guide for details and how many days to stay for the calendar.
So which month? If it is your first visit, May to June or September to October is a good balance. For photography choose winter, for quiet choose November and February to March, and for long days choose July. Whichever month you choose, it is the sky on the morning itself that decides; a flexible plan is always best. Once the dates are fixed, send a booking request; no payment is needed.
