The Cappadocia hot air balloon guide
How a flight morning unfolds, which basket suits you, how cancellation calls are made and what to know before you book a Cappadocia balloon ride.

The first thing you notice is the sound. Before the sun is anywhere near the ridge, a burner roars somewhere in the dark and a vast piece of fabric begins to stand up on its own. Ballooning is what many people come to Cappadocia for, yet the photographs never explain how the morning actually works, how to choose between baskets, or why a flight sometimes does not go. This guide covers exactly that.
What a flight morning looks like
Take-off is planned for about 45 minutes before sunrise. Your hotel pick-up is therefore roughly 75 to 90 minutes before that, and we send the exact time on WhatsApp the evening before. Pick-up is free from hotels in Göreme, Uçhisar, Çavuşin, Ortahisar, Ürgüp and Avanos.
A shuttle brings you to the launch field of the licensed balloon operator. Tea, coffee and a light breakfast are waiting, followed by a short safety briefing: how to climb into the basket, how to stand for landing (hold the handles, knees slightly bent) and what to keep in mind during the flight. Then the part you will remember. The envelope is laid out on the ground, inflated with large fans, and rises upright within a few minutes. When the burner fires for the first time, the whole field goes quiet for a second.
Lift-off is gentle and strangely silent; many guests do not realise they have left the ground. A balloon cannot be steered, but pilots read the different wind layers and use them to shape the route. One minute you are drifting down among the fairy chimneys close enough to see the pigeon holes, the next you are climbing, and on a clear day the view reaches Mount Erciyes and Mount Hasan. Flight time is roughly 45 to 75 minutes, depending on wind. Afterwards you receive a flight certificate and raise a non-alcoholic celebration drink; on the Deluxe private basket a breakfast table is also set for your group at the landing site. All of it is included.
The landscape from above does not look like the Cappadocia you know from the ground. You see the carved pigeon houses of Pigeon Valley, the pink folds of Kızılçukur, the stone columns of Love Valley and the tall silhouette of Uçhisar Castle all at once. The route changes daily with the wind, so no two flights are the same, which is why some people who stay a few days want to fly twice.
Choosing a basket
Flights are operated by licensed balloon companies; we handle booking and organisation. What you really choose is the basket, and the difference is more than price:
- Standard basket: a large basket for 16 to 24 people and about 60 minutes in the air. It is lively and sociable, and a good place to start for most guests. See the Standard balloon flight.
- Comfort basket: 8 to 12 people, around 75 minutes, and far easier to find a spot at the edge for photographs. Here is the Comfort flight.
- Deluxe or private basket: 2 to 8 people, again about 75 minutes. Ideal for honeymoons, proposals or a flight with your own group. Take a look at the Deluxe private basket.
All options are listed under balloon tours. Durations are approximate because the pilot lengthens or shortens the flight to suit the wind of the day.
A rough map: if budget comes first and a crowd does not bother you, Standard is the right place to start. If photography or a calmer morning matters, step up to Comfort. For a moment for two, a basket that belongs to your own group or a proposal at sunrise, Deluxe is the one.
Wind, weather and the cancellation call
Ballooning depends entirely on the weather. Wind speed, visibility and rain are measured before dawn, and the decision to fly or not is made in the early morning. It is not the agency's call. Cancellations are a normal part of ballooning, and a good pilot keeps the balloon on the ground whenever there is doubt.
Our rule is simple. If a flight is cancelled because of weather, we move you to the next morning free of charge, or you receive a full refund. You can also cancel for free yourself up to 24 hours before the tour time. A no-show is not refunded. The practical lesson: put the balloon on one of your first two mornings, never the last. That way a cancelled flight still has a spare day behind it. For planning the rest of the trip, how many days to stay in Cappadocia may help.
Who can fly, and what to wear
Children under 6 cannot fly. Balloon rides are not recommended for pregnant women or for anyone with a serious back or neck problem, as landings can be firm. Boarding is not entirely effortless either: you climb over the basket wall, so a reasonable level of adult fitness is expected. If you are unsure, write to us before booking and we will talk it through.
The detail people underestimate is how cool the morning is. Even in summer you may shiver on the field and then feel the burner's heat on your face in the air. Dress in layers, wear closed, flat shoes and tie back long hair. More detail in what to wear in Cappadocia.
Booking notes
In busy periods (spring and autumn weekends, public holidays) places can be gone weeks ahead. Sending a request costs nothing because no payment is taken at that stage. We usually confirm within one to two hours and never later than 24 hours, and WhatsApp is open around the clock. You pay on the day of the tour, in cash (EUR, USD or TRY) or by card.
A few things to bring: strap your phone to your wrist or neck, because a phone dropped from a basket is gone for good. Batteries drain quickly in the cold, so a spare power bank helps. Leave big bags at the hotel as space in the basket is tight. One note for families: the basket walls are high, and small children can only see out with an adult's help.
The flight lasts about an hour, but it stays with you far longer. You will remember it as a sound and a smell rather than a picture: the thump of the burner, a trace of gas drifting through cold air, and dozens of balloons rising together as the valley turns gold. When you are ready, leave a booking request and we will take it from there.
