Overview
The quickest way to understand Cappadocia is to put your hand on the stone first. Millions of years ago, ash thrown out by Mount Erciyes and Hasan Dağı settled and hardened into tuff, a rock soft enough to carve with simple tools, which then firms up as it meets the air. The Red Tour shows you, in a single day and mostly on foot, how that rock became homes, chapels and monasteries.
You travel in a minibus of at most 14 guests, with a guide in Turkish, English, German or Russian; groups are formed by language. Museum entrances and lunch are included in the price, and hotel pick-up and drop-off are free.

Göreme Open Air Museum: cool stone, old faces
We start here, before the crowds thicken. Your guide leads you into rock-cut chapels, a refectory with a long carved stone table and the one-room cells where monks lived. From outside you see nothing but a plain rock face; the moment you step inside the temperature drops, the light thins, your own voice comes back to you off the walls, and domes, columns and cross-shaped rooms open up. Nobody laid a single brick. Everything was made by taking stone away, architecture created by subtraction. The frescoes are Byzantine and date roughly to the 10th to 13th centuries; saints' faces and robes can still be made out. Which chapels are open on a given day depends on restoration work, so your guide plans the order accordingly. Flash is not allowed inside, and a quick question to your guide before you shoot is all it takes.
Paşabağ and Devrent: mushrooms and imagination
Next come the best-known fairy chimney forests. At Paşabağ, also called Monks Valley, stone mushrooms stand with two or three heads each, and one is said to have been home to the hermit Saint Simeon. You can climb the steps and look into his cell. Nearby Devrent is nicknamed Imagination Valley, because wind and rain have carved shapes that mean something different to everyone. The best known is a camel; you find the rest yourself. Children tend to enjoy this stop most, because every rock turns into a game. This is also where you learn what a fairy chimney really is: a soft column under a hard cap, and when the cap falls, the chimney's days are numbered.
Avanos: red clay and a foot-driven wheel
Lunch is by the Kızılırmak, the Red River, in Avanos. The town is known for pottery, and the clay comes from the river's rust-coloured banks. In a workshop a potter spins a foot-driven wheel and turns a lump of clay into a jug within minutes. You smell the wet clay, hear the wheel's soft hiss and watch the rhythm of a wet hand. You may try it yourself, and the first attempt is usually funny. Nobody expects you to buy anything, and your guide tells you so at the start.
Closing at Uçhisar Castle
The day ends with a view from Uçhisar Castle, one of the highest points in the region. The panorama gathers everything you saw that day in a single glance: valleys, vineyards and, on a clear day, Erciyes far away. After a short stop you are driven back to your hotel, usually between 17:30 and 18:00.
What to expect by season
The Red Tour runs daily, and each season has its own mood. Spring and autumn are best for walking, with soft light in Paşabağ and Devrent. Summer middays are hot and those valleys are mostly open air, so bring hat, sunscreen and water; the rock-cut chapels at Göreme are noticeably cooler. In winter the days are shorter, the wind at Uçhisar can be sharp, and snow may cap the fairy chimneys. Stone steps can be damp or icy, so wear flat, non-slip shoes. If weather or roads rule out the tour, we rebook it with you for another day. Dress in layers in any season: cool in the rock, warm in the sun, windy at the viewpoint.
Who it suits, and the pace
A balanced day for first-time visitors, families and history lovers. The walking is moderate: stone steps, low doorways and uneven ground in the museum; anything more demanding is the Green Tour's department. The day takes about eight hours. In summer the inside of the rock is a cool refuge at midday, and reaching the museum early is the easiest way to dodge the crowds. If you own a Museum Pass, put it in your booking note and we'll work out together how to use it at the entrances. The order of stops can shift a little with crowds, weather or restoration.

What is the difference between the Red and Green tours?
The Red Tour stays around Göreme and to the north, with light walking. The Green Tour heads south to an underground city and the Ihlara Valley walk, and is longer and more active.
Are museum entrance fees included?
Yes, entrances on the programme are included. If you have a Museum Pass, put it in your booking note and we'll clarify how to use it.
How much walking is there?
Moderate: stone steps and uneven ground in the museum, short walks elsewhere. If you have limited mobility, write to us when booking and we'll look at the route together.
Is there food for vegetarians or guests with allergies?
Lunch is a set menu; for a vegetarian option or allergies, just mention it in your booking note.
Is it suitable with children?
Yes. Children aged 6 to 12 pay the child price and under 6 travel free. Because of the stone steps in the museum, keep younger children close.
