How to get to Cappadocia
Plane, bus or car: the two airports, intercity coaches, road times, and the simplest ways to get from the airport to your hotel in Göreme.

Cappadocia sits in the middle of Türkiye, high on the Central Anatolian plateau. That means it is not equally easy to reach from every city, but with a little planning the journey becomes part of the trip. Below you will find the options by air, coach and car, followed by the simple ways to get from the airport to your hotel and a short checklist for arrival day. Times are approximate; traffic, the season and the weather can all change them.
By air: Nevşehir or Kayseri?
Two airports serve the region. Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is about 30 to 40 minutes by road from Göreme, Ürgüp and Uçhisar. Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) is further away, around an hour from Göreme. Distances are approximate and depend on traffic.
Both airports have flights from Istanbul, which take roughly an hour and a half. Direct flights from other cities vary with the season. Kayseri's network is generally wider, while Nevşehir is closer to your hotel and saves time and tiredness. If the fare difference is small, go for Nevşehir; if the better ticket lands in Kayseri, take it and allow for the extra road time.
When you choose your flight time, think about the balloon too. If you land late at night, a pre-dawn pick-up the next morning can be exhausting; in that case rest on your first day and leave the balloon for the second morning.
In winter, fog and snow sometimes disrupt flights. Keep your arrival and departure days flexible; especially if your flight home falls on the same day as a balloon morning, one weather delay can affect both plans. Check also whether your travel insurance covers flight disruptions.
By coach
Intercity coaches in Türkiye are comfortable and well organised. From Istanbul there are overnight services, and the journey takes about 11 to 12 hours. From Ankara it is around four and a half hours. Some companies go straight to Göreme's bus station, while others stop in Nevşehir or Ürgüp. When you buy a ticket, check the destination and find out beforehand how to get from there to your hotel. From Nevşehir's bus station minibuses run to Göreme during the day; late at night you may need a taxi.
The advantages of the coach are the price and that it drops you inside the region. The drawback is arriving tired early in the morning. Ask your hotel in advance whether you can have an early check-in, or you may have to wait until midday for your room.
Night coaches can be cold, so bring a light cardigan or shawl. Keep valuables and medication with you rather than in the hold, and start the journey with a full phone battery. Coaches usually stop every few hours, so carry some small change or a card.
By car
Driving from Istanbul is a long haul, roughly eight to nine hours, and many people split it over two days. From Ankara about three and a half to four hours is enough. Roads are in good condition, motorway sections are tolled, and if you rent a car it is worth asking whether the toll system is already set up on the vehicle.
You do not need a car inside Cappadocia. Our tours and activities include free hotel pick-up, so a rental only makes sense if you want to roam at your own pace. Bear in mind that the narrow streets and limited parking in Göreme and Uçhisar can occasionally be a challenge. In winter ice and snow are possible; if you rent a car, ask the rental company about snow tyres and chains, and leave a spare day.
From the airport to your hotel, and around the region
From the airport to your hotel
You have three choices: an airport shuttle, a taxi or a private transfer. The shuttle is cheap but makes several stops, so reaching your hotel can take more than an hour, and with heavy luggage it is not always the most comfortable choice. A taxi is quick, though it is not always easy to find one that matches your arrival time. A private transfer fixes the vehicle and time as soon as you give your flight details, and takes you from the terminal to the hotel door. It is the least stressful way to arrive for families, for people with a lot of luggage and for early-morning arrivals. You can request it when you make a booking; just add your flight number and landing time. A transfer is a separate service from tour pick-ups, so write to us for price and vehicle details.
Getting around the region
The towns are close together: from Göreme to Uçhisar, Ürgüp or Avanos is about 5 to 12 kilometres, so wherever you stay you reach everything quickly. Göreme is lively and central; Uçhisar is quieter and has the views; Ürgüp stands out for its restaurants and wine culture; Avanos sits by the river and is known for pottery.
Minibuses and shared taxis run between Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, Avanos and Nevşehir during the day; the service thins out in the evening. For short hops a taxi is handy. Once you book our tours and activities, transport is no longer a worry: we offer free pick-up and drop-off from hotels in Göreme, Uçhisar, Çavuşin, Ortahisar, Ürgüp and Avanos, with times sent on WhatsApp the evening before.
Notes for arrival day
In most hotels rooms are ready in the afternoon. If you arrive early, leave your bags at reception and spend the first hours on foot. A few small preparations make life easier:
- Tell your hotel your arrival time in advance, especially if you come in at night and someone has to open the door.
- Carry some cash in Turkish lira; it helps in small shops and on minibuses. There are cash machines in Göreme and Ürgüp.
- If you have a tour the next day, get the pick-up time on WhatsApp; we normally write to you the evening before.
- Keep the first evening light: a short walk and the sunset, then an early night. You have time for the rest.
To sum up: fly if time is short, take the coach if your budget is flexible, drive if you dream of an independent trip. For what to do once you arrive, continue with how many days to stay in Cappadocia, or go straight to the booking request form.
