Overview

When the alarm goes off, it is still night outside. A cold chill in the hotel courtyard, sleepy whispers, the headlights of the approaching minibus in the dark. Half an hour later, in a valley field, you watch a giant fabric spread on the ground inflate with fans, then the burners begin to roar and paint the inside of the fabric orange; the tea in your hand is still hot, and so is your face.

Standard basket is the most preferred form of this flight: in a 16 to 24-person basket divided into compartments, you are above Cappadocia for about an hour. The flight is operated by a licensed balloon company; we organize your reservation, hotel pickup and the morning's order.

  • Pre-flight breakfast treat
  • Non-alcoholic celebration and flight certificate
  • Next morning or full refund if cancelled due to weather

Before takeoff: darkness, tea, inflation

Pickup is about 75–90 minutes before the balloon lifts off. That means well after midnight depending on the season: roughly between 03:30 and 05:45. Tea, coffee and a light breakfast await you at the launch site, then your pilot gives a short safety briefing. After that, it's watching. Fans push cold air into the fabric, the burners send a warm wave to your cheeks with each burst, and the giant envelope slowly rises. We recommend keeping your phone in your pocket for the first few minutes; this scene is worth seeing once without a screen. At the launch site, the smell of gas, cold earth and fresh coffee mix together; you will remember that smell longer than a photo.

In the air: between burner and silence

Takeoff is so gentle that you realize you've left the ground from the rooftops below. Then a rhythm sets in: the burner roars, goes silent, roars again. In the silence between, you hear dogs barking from the valley, a rooster, and the muffled hum of other burners far away. The balloon has no rudder, but pilots choose direction by reading the wind blowing from different directions at different altitudes; that is, they "steer" by rising and descending. One moment you pass almost close enough to touch the tops of the vineyard rows and fairy chimneys, the next you rise a few hundred meters and, if the air is clear, Erciyes and Hasan Dağı appear on the horizon. The light also changes throughout the flight: before the sun catches the hills, the valley is in blue shadow, then the first light touches the tops of the fairy chimneys and burns downward. Time in the air varies between about 45 and 75 minutes depending on weather and wind; in the Standard basket it is an hour on average.

The short story of the landscape below

Looking from above, it is easier to understand why Cappadocia resembles another planet. Millions of years ago, volcanoes like Erciyes and Hasan Dağı covered the region with ash and lava; the ash layers over time turned into a soft rock called tuff. Wind and rain eroded the soft stone under a hard cap over the years, leaving behind fairy chimneys, deep valleys and wavy rock walls. People also carved this stone: the small doors and windows on the slopes are from old houses, churches and pigeon houses. It is said that pigeon houses were built to collect fertilizer for the vineyards on the valley floor; looking from the basket, this is why you see the vineyard rows with different eyes. Since the route is drawn by the wind, we cannot say in advance which valley you will pass over. But whichever it is, every rock beneath you is a page of this long story.

Landing and celebration

The landing site is chosen according to that morning's wind. Most of the time, the basket gently settles onto the trailer that the ground crew drives alongside. The landing stance is simple: knees slightly bent, hands on the basket handles, back facing the direction of flight. Then a toast is made with non-alcoholic drinks, and the pilot signs your flight certificate. Watching the balloon being deflated and packed up is a show in itself: the fabric is spread on the grass, and the ground crew rolls and folds it like a giant carpet. Most mornings you are back at your hotel well before ten, and the whole day is ahead of you.

Boarding, age and health

The basket wall is about one meter high; getting in requires stepping on a step and swinging your leg over. A healthy adult can do this comfortably, and the ground crew helps if needed. Children aged 6–12 fly at child price, and those under 6 cannot fly. We do not recommend the flight for pregnant women or those with serious back or neck problems; if you are unsure, message us on WhatsApp before booking. Those afraid of heights are often surprised: because you flow with the wind, no breeze hits your face and that familiar stomach-drop feeling is largely absent.

Weather and cancellation

The balloon flies only when wind, visibility and temperature permit. If conditions exceed the limit, the operator cancels the flight; the decision is usually made before pickup and communicated to you via WhatsApp. In case of cancellation, you have the option of a free transfer to the next morning or a full refund. We recommend putting a backup morning in your holiday schedule and not leaving the balloon morning to the last day.

Itinerary

  1. 05:00
    Hotel pick-up

The minibus collects you at your hotel door. This sample timeline fits spring and autumn; pick-up is earlier in summer and later in winter.

  2. 05:45
Tea and breakfast at the launch field

Warm drinks and a light breakfast while you meet your pilot. The ground crew prepares the field well before sunrise.

  3. 06:00
    Inflation and safety briefing

Fans fill the envelope, burners heat it and the balloon rises upright. The pilot gives a short safety briefing and shows the landing position.

  4. 06:20
    Take-off and flight

You spend about an hour in the air. The pilot drops into the valleys where the wind allows, then climbs for the wide view.

  5. 07:20
    Landing

The basket touches down in an open field or onto a trailer. Everyone stays in the basket until the pilot says it is safe to step out.

  6. 07:35
    Toast and flight certificate

A toast with non-alcoholic drinks, then your pilot signs your flight certificate. A good moment for group photos.

  7. 08:15
    Return to the hotel

The minibus takes you back to your hotel. Breakfast is often still being served, and a short nap afterwards feels well earned.

Important information

No payment is taken when you send a booking request; you pay on the day, in cash (EUR, USD, TRY) or by card. Requests are usually confirmed within 1–2 hours and always within 24 hours. A licensed balloon operator runs the flight. Children under 6 cannot fly, and we do not recommend the flight for pregnant women or anyone with serious back or neck problems. Boarding takes a step up and a leg swing that a fit adult manages easily. Flights are cancelled when weather, visibility or wind are unsuitable. You stand throughout the flight.

Meeting point and pickup

Hotel pick-up about 2 hours before sunrise (roughly 03:30–05:45, by season). Pick-up and drop-off are free. We send your pick-up time on WhatsApp the evening before. Pilots give their commands in English in the basket, just a few simple words.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be to fly?

From age 6. Children aged 6 to 12 pay the child price; for safety reasons children under 6 cannot go into the basket.

What happens if the flight is cancelled for wind?

You can move to the next morning free of charge or take a full refund. The decision is usually made before pick-up and we message you on WhatsApp.

How hard is it to climb into the basket?

The wall is about a metre high, so you step up and swing a leg over. The ground crew helps, but a fit adult manages easily.

Can a pregnant woman fly?

We don't recommend it. Take-off and landing can involve sudden movements, so the flight is not suitable during pregnancy.

I'm afraid of heights. Can I still fly?

Most people cope better than they expect, because you drift with the wind and feel no breeze. If your fear is severe, write to us before booking.

Cancellation policy

You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour. If the flight is cancelled for weather or operational reasons, you can move to the next morning free of charge or take a full refund. No-shows are not refunded.
